About this deal

The main mechanic of the game involves the active player rolling the five dice, and then all players use the dice to make two pairs of dice to give them two numbers. In this game, players will explore a Dungeon (from amongst four different choices) made up of a maze of rooms, some with treasure, some with monsters, and some with other special actions inside. There are also some interesting choices to be made with the fighting of monsters as you can try and “unlock” additional numbers that will damage them but this does take time, so there is a balance here.

I’d kind of prefer that you be able to stay in the game, but I’ll freely admit that there’s not much else for you to do if you do get to the point of running out of health. I appreciate that they have all of the content and then essentially a “quick reference” on the right side. The collection of treasures and treasure chests to grant points and special abilities is a nice addition. The box has dozens of sheets of paper, each double-sided and showing one of the four dungeons available. I complain sometimes that these RNWs need to have more sheets if they don’t use dry erase boards—not a problem here, because there’s no shot I’m playing this 200 times.A game of Dungeons, Dice and Danger ends when the players collectively defeat all of the monsters on the map. To Justies, everything can be mashed into one-dimensional blurbs that say nothing about a game nor reveal anything about themselves (except maybe that they are total buzzkills you should disinvite to your next game night).

If a player is not able to cross out two boxes (combination of dungeon spaces and dealing damage to a monster) then they lose a life point. It’s much more my speed than, say, an “I cut, you choose” type of game, since my choice doesn’t negatively impact anyone else. As you cross off rooms, I think it is also important to see what options you leave yourself; it is good to always be adjacent to as many different numbers as possible – because the penalties for not crossing off rooms can get pretty painful on your health meter. But then you get back up, and soon you understand this game state better and the headspace you have to inhabit to thrive in it, and start to remember the distinct personalities of each map. One gives you a gem and some extra Life Points, another lets you cross off any two spaces of your choice, and the third lets you use the Black Die another three times. The passive players (or in the case of solo play, the only person at the table) must use only the white dice to make their pairs, giving the active player the most flexibility each turn. On subsequent turns, you can use any filled-in number to “fight” the Monster by crossing off one of its life point boxes. You always want to leave yourself with as many possible different dice results as possible on your map so you have maximum choice and minimum futility.
